90s Teen Movies I Can’t Get Enough Of!

So last night I hung out with my friends Stef and her soon to be hubby, Alex. We had hair trials for the upcoming nuptials— only 2 weeks away!!!! As we did wedding crafts, we thought we would have a blast to the bast and watch one of our fave 90s teen flix…. She’s All That! So it inspired me to make a list of my all-time favourite 90s teen movies I never get sick of!

1. Clueless

As if! This was film brought me through my formative years for fashion. My best friend at the time, Ashley King and I were obsessed. We wanted to dress like Cher and Dion, do our makeup like them, act and especially talk the talk of Clueless.

Synopsis:
2 Rich girls who like to shop, find Brittany Murphy in need of a Makeover. They do a makeover. A lot of matchmaking: the little guy from The Princess Bride and another teacher, Brittany Murphy and Elton, etc… A James Dean look-alike named Christian comes to town. Cher falls in love. He’s gay. Then Brittany Murphy declares she has a crush on Paul Rudd, who is Cher’s ex-step brother. Cher is sad. She shops. Celine Dion song plays. (***Spoiler Alert***) “Oh my god! I love Josh (who is actually Paul Rudd)!!”. Wedding. The End.

Best Fashion Moment:
Everything! But there were a few noteworthy shout outs:

Mel: What the hell is that?
Cher: A dress.
Mel: Says who?
Cher: Calvin Klein.

Cher: “You don’t understand, this is an Alaia.”
Mugger: “An a-what-a?”
Cher: “It’s like a totally important designer”

My fashion inspirations in grade 5: mini backbacks, knee socks, collared shirts under sweaters, plaid and berets!!!

…and I cannot forget the computerized outfit selector! This is my dream ever since Clueless came out!!!! I would even take this outdated software!

Best Lines:

“Do you prefer “fashion victim” or “ensembly challenged”?” – Cher

“He does dress better than I do, what would I bring to the relationship?”- Cher

“Yeah, I hope not sporadically.” – Tai

2. Empire Records

As a kid I wanted to work in a record store because of this movie. A fantastic cast with a young Ethan Embry, Liv Tyler and Renée Zellweger; and an ever better soundtrack. (I got the VHS and cassette soundtrack that year for Christmas)

Synopsis:
Lucas left in charge of the store goes to Atlantic City and looses all the stores money in a round at the craps table. He comes back. Joe is pissed. Oh Joe is the boss… Lucas gets punished by having to sit on a couch. MusicTown is going to buy Empire Records—this is bad… Meanwhile it’s Rex Manning Day! Liv Tyler is obsessed. And AJ is obsessed with her. Deb is depressed and shaves her head. Warren Beatty tries and shoplifts Whitney Houston. He also is punished by sitting on the couch. Renée Zellweger does something a little slutty and has sex with Rex even though her best friend is in love with him. Liv Tyler is a pill head. Mark starts a band, called “Marc”. Veto. Veto. Veto. They give Deb a funeral to convince her not to kill herself. Party to save Empire Records! (***Spoiler Alert***) Dance on the roof!

Most Awkward Fashion Moment:
Liv Tyler’s underwear bra combo… It always makes me cringe:

Best Fashion moments:
Plaid Skirts, cropped tops, Doc Martins, and faded denim.

A Fun Little Extra:
Erin Wasson styled a fantastic editorial for Elle called “Smells Like Teen Spirit” inspired by the film.

Best Lines:
“What’s with today today?” – Lucas

“Well “Sinead O’Rebellion.” Shock me shock me shock me with that deviant behavior.” – Gina

“Jane, did you compare the percentage of teenage male Rex Manning fans to the incidence of homosexuality amongst teenage males?” – Lucas

3. She’s All That

What more could you want out of a movie? FPJ + RLC (for those of you who missed the 90s that’s Freddie Prince Jr. & Rachael Leigh Cook—I don’t think this was even a thing) Buffy cameo. Paul Walker as a bad ass. Choreographed group dance to Fatboy Slim. Lil’ Kim shockingly fully clothed. Macaulay Culkin’s kid bro. Fulton from The Mighty Ducks…And the incredible cherry on the top of this delicious sundae… USHER RAYMOND!

Synopsis:
Popular guy (Zac) gets dumped by equally popular girlfriend.  He then gets dared to date nerdy art girl (Laney). Makeover. Awesome dance by Matthew Lillard. Laney falls for Zac. Zac falls for Laney.  “Am I a bet? Am I a FUCKING BET?”. Prom. Zac goes with Ex. Laney goes with the Ass (Paul Walker).  (***Spoiler Alert***) Kiss by Pool. Zac is naked at graduation.

Best Fashion Moment(s):
Laney’s transformation–I am a sucker for a makeover! Red dress with matching shoes and her new do!

On today’s viewing I found a great outfit Laney wore, it was when she was Art Geek-Chic, I loved the colors!

Best Line:
“My soul is an island. My car is a Ford” – weird art performance guy

4. 10 Things I Hate About You

3 words: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (or maybe that’s 2 because the last 2 are hyphenated) Regardless, I am a HUGE fan of JGL and this movie is perfection! Plus… Heath Ledger! Another fun soundtrack! and Awesome Paintball montage!

Synopsis:
2 sisters. Kat is older. Bianca is younger. Bianca wants to date Andrew Keegan, but their dad makes a rule that she can’t date until Cat does. Joseph Gordon-Levitt falls for Bianca (sidenote: Who he dated in 3rd rock from the Sun). Then Bianca, Andrew Keegan, Cameron— who is really Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and his friend Michael, all work to get and pay Heath Ledger to woo Julia Stiles… I mean Kat! It’s kinda hard. There’s singing in bleachers, table dancing, and angry chick rock. Then Bam! She’s wooed!  Prom Time! Bianca goes with Cameron, Kat goes with Heath Ledger. Kat finds out that Heath was paid to date her. She’s pissed. Andrew Keegan gets punched. Kat writes a sad poem and cries in class called “10 Things I Hate About You”. (***Spoiler Alert***)Heath Ledger tells her he loves her. Happy Ending.

Best Fashion Moment:
Bianca: There’s a difference between like and love. Because, I like my Skechers, but I love my Prada backpack.
Chastity: But I love my Skechers.
Bianca: That’s because you don’t have a Prada backpack.

Best Lines:

What’s normal? Those damn… Dawson’s river kids sleeping in each other’s beds and what not?” – The Dad

” Remove head from sphincter, then drive!” – Kat

5. Can’t Hardly Wait

Ethan Embry makes my list once again! And Seth Green is a Wigger. Dharma (from Dharma and Greg) is a stripper angel in love with Scott Baio. And Jason Segel!!! (I just ruined the surprise for later)

Everyone runs. (***Spoiler Alert***) Next morning Preston goes to the train station to stop Amanda. And then it’s a happy ending… something to do with writing letters everyday! The End.

Best Fashion Moments:

Well for starters everything Seth Green is wearing! from the chain to the goggles!

Also Jennifer Love Hewitt’s classic 90s look, light blue spaghetti strap and darker blue skirt.

6. Cruel Intentions

Cruel Intentions will always hold a close place in my heart, it’s the first rated R movie I snuck into! That, and you see Ryan Philippe’s butt! That was a big deal back then, because we all thought he was soooo dreamy!

Synopsis:

Also there is this weird attraction thing between Kathryn and Sebastian. Meanwhile there is a new girl (Reese Witherspoon) in town. She’s a virgin, so of course Sebastian has to seduce her! Also he made a bet with Kathryn about it. Well then the obvious happens. He falls for her, and vice versa. Kathryn is jealous. Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar kiss. There is something to do with a bleach blonde gay Joshua Jackson. Also, there is a lot of seduction and manipulation that its hard to keep track of… Reese finds out about the bet. She’s mad. In the end, (***Spoiler Alert***) Sebastian gets hit by a car, Reese and him profess their love. And he dies. Reese Witherspoon gets his hot car and revenge on Kathryn! The End.

Best Fashion Moments:

Here SMG is wearing a classic black suit with fantastic accessories. I love the hat and dark sunglasses look.

And finally this look, with the sheer top and the ornate bra underneath is gorgeous.

Best Line:

Best Dressed of the Emmys 2012

Here it is my list for Best Dressed at the 2012 Emmys!

Ginnifer Goodwin

Ginnifer Goodwin in a beautiful Monique Lhuillier. The amazing orange-red on nude stood out the most on the red carpet. She wins my vote for best dress of the evening!

Elisabeth Moss

Elisabeth Moss took a big risk in this Dolce & Gabbana. The print is very fresh, and I love the structured ruffle detail. She is wearing alice + olivia shoes designed by Stacey Bendet, H. Stern earrings and bracelet, and a Norman Silverman ring. But my favorite part of this outfit is the amazing pearl encrusted clutch— I MUST have it!

Edie Falco

Okay, I have to start off by saying, how amazing does Edie Falco look?! I think she looks absolutely fabulous. This dress, by Stella McCartney, is just amazing on her. I love  how it almost looks like she is wearing two completely different dresses from the front and the back! Plus her hair and makeup complete the look perfectly.

Hayden Panettiere

Alright, admittedly I am not the biggest fan of Hayden, however I am a huge fan of Marchesa and Hayden’s stylist (and perhaps Hayden’s choice… perhaps). I love this gorgeous grecian style Marchesa gown. I am in love with the gold lace paired with sheer navy blue!

January Jones

So this year at the Emmys there was very little black. Celebrities who’s go to is black, opted for color, like Tina Fey who wore a beautiful plum colored dress by Vivianne Westwood. However, I believe January Jones stood out in this immaculate Zac Posen gown. The second woman of “Mad Men” on my list this year! I love the playfulness of the sheer against the solid. And we are definitely seeing a trend of asymmetrical hemlines.

Julianne Hough

The color is incredible. The hemline details are exquisite. This gown by designer Georges Hobeika Couture stood out to me among the other ladies in aqua. The details are so impeccable, I just can’t stop looking at this dress.

Lovin’ the Ladies in Lemon

So yellow was the winning color of the evening. Three of the actresses who won an Emmy were adorned in this radiant color!

1. Julianne Moore in an amazing silhouette designed by Dior.

2. Clare Danes pregnant and glowing in Lanvin.

3. Kaylee Cuoco in an oragami structured gown by Angel Sanchez.

4. Julie Bowen was radiant in Monique Lhuillier.

5. And last but definately not least is Leslie Mann in this incredible dress by Naeem Kahn.

Smart Suits

A lot of the men this year were very nicely dressed—there’s nothing better than a man in a suit! However, a few were ahead of the crowd.

1. The host of the evening Jimmy Kimmel stood out in his 3-piece.

2.Winner of Best Supporting Actor, Aaron Paul, also wins Biggest Risk with Highest Reward! I love the chance he took wearing a brown suit by Prada with a bow tie!

3.When she had her pant on, Ellen Degeneres looked beautiful in this cobalt blue suit.

4. Not a fan of his show, but Jon Cryer’s suit is a YES! Lovin’ the grey jacket with contrasting lapels.

5. And then there is Clare Danes arm candy/baby daddy Hugh Dancy looking dashing in this classic suit!

London Fashion Week: Trends

Some trends from London Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2013

Lace

This is a trend that I am glad is sticking around… I love a well done lace — I may be picky, but there is nothing better! This season we saw lace brought to the runway in a whole new way! Simone Rocha used ginormous floral print lace in Day Glo! Christopher Bailey made lacy trench coats from laser-cut leather and metallic foil for Burberry Prorsum; Temperley London used an exaggerated lace against sheer and solid skirts. Erdem used it as a base for flowers, and it was encased in plastic by Christopher Raeburn.

Cutwork

Along the same lines as lace, is cutwork. Giles’ collection had a beautiful display of this detail, creating a lace-like pattern resembling shattered glass. Temperley London used it in a 50’s style bustier dress. Peter Pilotto used cutwork subtly to compliment the bold patterns

CGI/Digital Prints

London catwalks were teeming with digital prints. Bold and beaultiful, this more recent trend, in my opinion was perfected by the late Alexander McQueen, so it stands to reason that the trend continues in Lee’s hometown.  In my “London Fashion Week— Best of…” post I have featured a few of these designers showcasing their digital talents. Mary Katrantzou has truly found inspiration in everything in anything, this season it was banknotes, coinage, and stamps— this created beautiful geometry and interesting lines. The stunning prints Matthew Williamson created using landscapes, photoreal prints, and bleeding effects created a incredible ombre. Peter Pilotto remained true to their past of fabulous color stories, whilst demonstrating their use of CGI prints. Antoni and Alison used a melding of Art and Florals—using brush strokes  and photoreal prints. Preen went the animal print-slash-floral blocking print route! Temperley London used a fusion of Ikat tapestry and folk prints, to create a eastern-european-like feel. And finally Giles created broken glass patterns with great detail, and a horse for good measure!

Playfull Sheerness

This season I loved the use of sheerness in new and unique ways. Erdem used it as a juxtaposition with solid piece, but in an unusual way… I loved it! Temperley made stripes using the contrast of solid and sheer (satin & organza) on dirndl skirts. Maria Grachvogel did sheer in slouchy tailoring. Christopher Kane used sheer panels amongst his feminine silhouettes.  Other collections that featured sheerness were Willow, Topshop, Giles, John Rocha and Mark Fast played with sheer cheekiness!

Stripes

So as I said previously Temperley created stripes by using satin and organza. PPQ went sailor. Jonathan Saunders either laminated a print on fabric or printed right on leather. Holly Fulton used it as a background to busier prints, and some we used to create a chevron. Issa used stripes among her vibrant prints.

There are many more trends that we saw on the runways in London this season, such as: Dip Dye, Hoods, Patchwork, 1950s, also the 1970s, utility, the colors Apricot and Shocking Pink, Futuristic and Metallics!

London Fashion Week— Best of…

Giles S/S ’13

“Initially I had been thinking about Jayne Mansfield and the place she occupies in pop culture… She is such a graphic figure, comic and tragic. And is defined by that car crash.” – Giles Deacon

Mary Katrantzou S/S ’13

“Sometimes the print is so visual, people can’t see the silhouette behind it. So I think you have to almost make a statement by really focusing on what’s there without the print in order for people to understand that, yes, I do think my prints have a strong signature but I don’t think I’m only about print.” – Mary Katrantzou

Temperley London S/S ’13

“Modernizing the Temperley woman, making her uncomplicated and effortlessly beautiful.” – Alice Temperley

Erdem S/S ’13

“I was thinking about a woman from another planet coming down to earth”  – Erdem Moralioğlu

Burberry Prorsum S/S ’13

“I wanted it playful, sassy and joyous with colours so intense you wring them out” – Christopher Bailey

Peter Pilotto S/S’13

Christopher Kane S/S ’13

“Colors that make you feel a bit sick.” – Christopher Kane

“Girls love a bit of rubber” – Christopher Kane

LFW: Mary Katrantzou A/W ’12 & S/S ’13

I had high expectations for Mary Katrantzou this season at London Fashion Week!

A/W ’12
Her incredible A/W ’12 collection was groundbreaking. The prints were created  in rubber by the Lesage embroidery atelier in Paris; this is the first time they have worked with such a medium. Her silhouettes were ambitious, to accompany the exceptional inspiration found in the patterns; from vintage typewriters to clocks, hedges, No 2 HB pencils and telephones.

S/S ’13
Once again in her S/S ’13 Collection, she has perfected the abstract print from the  inspiration of currency and postage.  The prints this season are still strong, as banknotes, coins and stamps naturally create these geometric patterns, however this collection has softer, more classic silhouettes. This juxtaposition makes for a collection that is romantic and a touch wistful.
