JeanPaulGaultier Retrospective: from the sidewalk to the catwalk

The World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From Sidewalk to Catwalk

So my fashion/travel bosom buddy (Stefani Soliman- @stefsoliman ) and I made it to the Jean Paul Gaultier Retrospective. Just in the nick of time, on the very last days before they closed the doors of Musée des beaux-arts Montreal exhibit.

Over 140 ensembles of JPG creation were magically curated by MMFA’s director, Nathalie Bondil. The incredible collection of garments adorned mannequins brought to life!

Most of the looks were drawn from JPG’s couture collections though there was also be garments from RTW. As well as the ensembles from his collections, the exhibit was complete with photographs, sketches, stage costumes, film excerpts from JPG costumed designed, movies, runway shows, concerts and dance performances.

Jean Paul Gaultier has been named (one of) fashion’s enfant terrible. For three and a half decades he has been pushing the boundaries of what is taboo on the fashion world. Bondage, Sexuality and cone bras became synonymous with Gaultier’s name

“What is masculine and what is feminine, anyway? Why should men not show that they can be fragile or seductive? I am only happy when there is no discrimination.” – Jean Paul Gaultier

“I wanted to create an exhibition on Jean Paul Gaultier more than any other couturier because of his great humanity, he offers an open-minded vision of society, a crazy, sensitive, funny, sassy world in which everyone can assert his or her own identity, a world without discrimination, a unique ‘fusion couture.’” -Nathalie Bondil, Director and Chief Curator of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

The shock of the way I mix patterns and fabrics can be disconcerting, but what I am trying to do is provoke new ideas about how pieces can be put together in different ways. I think this is a more modern way to wear clothes that in themselves are fairly classic. – Jean Paul Gaultier

The retrospective was breathtaking! So much genius, imagination and raw talent in one place, was very humbling, and inspiring. I am so glad Stef and I caught it on the last day—it was worth the line in the rain!

“Open your eyes and find beauty where you normally don’t expect it.” – Jean Paul Gaultier
